If Aliens are real and are visiting Earth at regular intervals, investigating our nuclear weapons, abducting people and so on then I have to wonder what the purpose is and whether we're limiting our view of what might be at play based on that most human of weaknesses, the weakness of over estimating our importance.
Why investigate our nuclear weapons? I mean they're hardly a threat to an Alien life form living light years away and would be unlikely to become a threat of many thousands of years if ever.
So is their interest just to make sure we don't hurt ourselves like some kind of philanthropic friendly alien? I see that as unlikely as well, I mean if we found microbes on Mars I don't think we'd devote the next few thousands years to just making sure those microbes are happy and safe.
Why would they visit and monitor us over so many generations, perhaps thousands or even tens of thousands of years? Surely we're not that interesting, we're just relatively un-hairy primates who have finally progressed from throwing rocks at each other to throwing explosive rocks. We'd likely have as much in common with them as a field mouse has with us.
Also, if there are different kinds of Alien visiting which seems to be suggested then they would likely have about as much in common with each other as we have with mice unless there's a point of technological development that little new progress becomes possible. I mean if alien species X is 100,000 years ahead of us on the technological scale and alien species Y is 1 million years ahead of us on the technological scale then they'd be totally alien to us and to alien species X. That is unless by another 10,000 years you pretty much work everything out that's worth knowing in which case the difference between both alien species becomes negligible with both being equally advanced to us. I raise this point because it could be that aliens in flying saucers are visiting Earth to research us and other Alien life forms, perhaps their primary interest is each other and we happen to be a basic third life form thrown in the mix. It isn't hard to imagine the alien in the flying saucer visiting to investigate that really basic life form that's flying around in dumbbell shaped craft to watch those primates on Earth.
So here's a thought, what if our relationship to aliens is such a big gulf that we're almost insignificant in the bigger picture? What if Earth is just a conveniently located science project or free range genetic farm? People tend to pay attention to things they own, what if aliens have such a long term interest in us because we're owned? We're effectively property of blah?
They come down here to check their product is doing just fine and they take an interest in our nukes because they want to make sure we don't do something dumb to destroy the place meaning they'd have to start again elsewhere. So their interest in us isn't driven by fear because we're no threat at all and isn't driven out of good natured kindness because we're just another basic life form and isn't driven by scientific curiosity since they must have us worked out as a species by now but is driven by ownership and utility. We're a genetic farm or a ridiculously long experiment. Maybe they even came up with the notion of gods as a great way to set us rules and aims all designed to keep us/their product safe and good condition. Perhaps the reality we're in makes the Matrix look dull and unimaginative.
Perhaps that's why the government is so quiet about these matters, perhaps they've been told the same thing already and so to keep the peace they just don't say anything. I mean what good would come from announcing to the world that you're all discounted genetic product on a conveniently placed lump of rock away from anywhere interesting.
Perhaps there's no such thing as aliens and we're the kings of the hill, perhaps aliens are just very slow at figuring us out or have some unknown benign curiosity, perhaps they're not even interested in us any more than we're interested in those ants at our picnic which we casually look at for a few minutes before ignoring them for something more interesting or perhaps we're missing some much bigger picture which we simply don't have the mental capacity to ever understand.
