Hey everyone. I live in southwest Virginia and have noticed that people here don't seem to have many sightings but people around us have plenty. Can anyone theorize why? I would be very greatful for any input from the community.

Good point, I'd be interested to know as well. My father had a peculiar sighting as a boy in Northern VA (where I grew up).
Are you going by the "20 most recent..." function in your assessment? Using that it always feels like there aren't any sightings. Maybe people in southern / more rural areas of VA are just too conservative and fearful to consider reporting what they've seen? Or they are just more privatized in their lives.

Maybe....i would say that people from virginia are more intelligent....that they dont spur right away when they see something strange in the sky....They weight things and dont jump at once in any conclusions. Or maybe they are just privy as lemon stated.

UFO is still just unidentified. lawsinium, not saying you are assuming that people are stupid for reporting something to MUFON thinking it is paranormal or alien. It is purely unidentified, It could be a UAV, experimental, model or natural phenomena ...etc. Try and not lump people in one basket that report UFOs to MUFON as kooks or raving mad alien UFO worshipers. Not saying we don't get those but it sort of disrespects the many pilots, military, gov,, law enforcement and experienced observers that report to MUFON everyday.  Undergoo Most of the time it is because a population is unaware of MUFON or is not a highly populated area. Most of our spikes in reports revolve around population centers for statistical reasons. The more active a chapter is in a particular area and are good at marketing the MUFON name to the media and other venues typically will have more participation from the public. But population still is the biggest factor for exception of mass sightings. |

I agree with youMo that UFO is just still unidentified.
But if you do a little experiment with the public about the connation of the word UFO....you might be suprised that most of them will tell you that UFO means space aliens who look like humans. They are not aware that we are just talking about of an object of unknown origin.
Mother Earth provides us lots of unsual natural phenomena, optical illusions which for an untrained eyes are perceived differently.
Please dont get me wrong here, but as I said in my other threads, we all have different opinons and everyone is right to his own sets of beliefs. However, if one is true with his conviction of disproving what needs to be proven to be true, then that person is on the path of finding what is the real and true. This is why argument is part of the scientific method.
Doing a research is very wide interdiscipline. And of course you know this. It does not mean that because a high ranking government official tells us that he saw something, we quickly believe this person. In an academic argument, we call this the fallacy of authority. If we follow this error in thinking , then we can't prove anything. That's why if we need to have an intelligent discussions we need to set aside fallacies and concentrate mainly on the objective of the topic.
IMHO that is what forum is all about.
