I wonder if someone opened up an actual store dedicated to the UFO and alien subject matter would it actually generate enough money to survive?

I think it has already been done to some degree. MUFON has a store on its site and in review it is basic with the standard stuff I come to expect from these types of outfits ;D. To make it superior to the norm requires someone to monitor and market the store and more specifically the items being sold. That takes a certain amount of funding up front and a gifted marketer with a product that would moreover cover costs of marketing and merchandizing . That is hard to come by as you may have a kickass product like the Apple ipod, but you have to have a huge marketing and maintenance apparatus in place beforehand and thus a huge fund source to back up the sales to make the numbers work in your favor. Even with the IPad Apple is having trouble making it so as an example. Costs are always eating at revenue and most ideas although neat up front simply can not keep up with the constant vacuum of costs over the long run . So there is much to getting this sort of thing off the ground that makes it prohibitive . Bumber Eh!

Location, location, location. From someone who lived in Roswell NM, yes sometimes stores dedicated solely to aliens and UFO's can do very well.

I've been to this place: Alien Cafe, Brooklyn, NYA hole in the wall alien themed cafe. It gets mixed reviews. Not much in terms of an actual alien/UFO store. Combining a cafe with an alien/UFO store selling coffee and having a lounge area w/ wi-fi wouldn't be a bad concept. There's a lot of alien/UFO books, movies, documentaries, collectibles, memorabilia. Maybe you could generate extra revenue with an online sales. The thing is though people are reading more e-books and getting their movies online so that would be a concern. Having something else like a Cafe to supplement a lack of retail sales would be a safer bet.

I wanted to add that as a previous small business owner for anyone wanting to start something like this, Go for it! ;D But much research has to be done to ensure that the cash flow is enough to cover monthly costs. That said however a good accountant should be able to go over a prospectus with a prospective owner and show the in's and outs to ensure good cash flow for any given location and offerings. The tough part is doing all the math for a prospectus and coming up with the needed seed money. Most angles and lenders want unreal instant satisfaction in return on investment and that can kill an endeavor quick. After that though, there is a long tradition in America of little book shops and cafe's catering to this sort of thing from religious book stores selling bibles to spiritual cafe's selling odd books and coffee. So it is very doable, but the numbers have to work out and often they don't due to things like rent, taxation, local demographics, amount of money you want to make Etc... But like I said, if anyone in here is thinking of such an endeavor, go for it!!!

It sounds like you have small business experience. There is a lot that goes into running a business that needs to be planned out and researched. One thing you do see in most major cities these small mom and pop stores around residential areas or shopping squares/malls. 99 cent stores are very popular and successful in the downturn economy. An ideal location would be a trourist destination like Roswell but there is only one Roswell or Sedona, Arizona for the new agers. A UFO/ET store may be something fun and uniques in cities that are not UFO tourist destinations. All you need to do is set of the business so there is a product that sells and brings in the customers. In NY there is the Science, Industry and Business Library (SIBL) that gives free advice to future entrepreneurs. There may be similar services in other cities to help a person get set up.

Well it's something I'll think about but probably will not go through with it.
