Leo’s Love Story is the newly published young adult novella by playwright Robert Hensley. Telling the story of a young man who makes the drastic decision to run away from home under the pressures of familial expectations and deep-seated secrets after his brother is killed in the Second World War. Afraid that he may never have the chance to realize his own dreams, Leo sets out to make his way in the world, but finds his new plans cut short when he is abducted by an alien being. The result is a contemporary science fiction/fantasy coming-of-age tale that is laced with true love and secrets that threaten the sanctity of this budding romance.
“I think most teens feel trapped by their family’s expectations, feel like a stranger in their own world,” says Hensley. “These themes aren’t new or exclusive to the story that I’ve written, which is why I think it appeals to so many people; young or old, male and female. If you’ve ever felt like an outsider or been bullied, and dreamed of being loved and accepted, then Leo’s Love Story will give you some hope.”
With LGBT youth committing suicide in alarming numbers due to bullying, Hensley feels that more books written for alternative youth with positive role models should be finding their way into schools and afterschool programs.
“I was bullied in school for years and years, and there were moments when I contemplated suicide,” continues Hensley. “Films, books, and theatre were my greatest escape. I sought out gay characters and storylines, some of which were not great, but it was harder to feel like such a freak when I was watching or reading about someone with whom I could identify.”
It is this ability to develop and write relatable characters that mark the success of Hensley’s plays; The Dark Sisters, a short play, and the full-length Turning Out, both published by JAC Publishing and available on Amazon.com. His latest collection of short plays, Death, Life and a Crème-filled Center was recently presented as a staged reading in Los Angeles, directed by Tim Hill (Alvin and the Chipmunks, HOP).
