Hello everyone - this is what I saw back in July 1967 in Winnipeg, Manitoba -
One July night at about 12:30 am, I was walking down Parker avenue with a friend. We were heading towards his house, which was about 2 blocks away, in the direction of Pembina Highway. We were very close to the corner of Daniel and Parker. Parker avenue was the last street/avenue. On the other side of it, there was a large field (they have since added another street, but at that time, the field extended all the way from Parker to Taylor Avenue, and had a railroad track running through the center of it). There's not much else there, just grass and small bunches of willow trees. It was a warm night, no wind, no clouds, clear sky.
As we were walking, we noticed what we thought was a star, but this star was really bright and was moving around. There was about 12 telephone wires running along the street, so we could see that this light was moving up and down in the sky beyond these wires.
As we watched it, we stopped because it was such a strange thing to see. It would shoot across the sky, and stop instantly. It would hover in one spot for a while, totally still. Then it would get really bright, then kind of fade back to looking like a star. A few times it got really bright, and we thought it might have been coming towards us. It changed colors and kind of twinkled a bit. It wasn't a constant steady light. We couldn't tell how far away from us it was, but there were a few times when it looked like it was coming in close. I would say it was about 1-2 miles from us most of the time, and maybe came in to about 1/4 mile from where we were standing, at times.
We couldn't make out any shape, because it was dark out, but it was a really bright object. It flew like nothing else I've seen, zipping around and instantly stopping. It was incredibly fast, and totally silent. I would estimate it to be about 10 times faster than even the jets we were used to seeing at the time. As it flew around, we didn't see any other aircraft in the area.
We watched it for about 20 minutes, then it just faded out of sight. I'm sure lots of other people must have seen it also, but we had no way to compare notes. When we were watching it, I felt really awe struck. This might sound kind of funny, but we had the feeling that it was watching us, especially when it came in close. It was obviously nothing like any kind of airplane or balloon, and appeared to defy the laws of physics. It occurred to us that this thing might be from somewhere else, which made the whole event kind of scary. Neither of us reported it, because we didn't know who to report it to. I remember keeping an eye out on the news to see if anyone else had seen it, but there was no mention of it, so we just kept it to ourselves.
