Experts: Strange lights in sky over Houston likely space junkwww.khou.com/home/Experts-Strange-lights-in-sky-over-Houston-likely-space-junk-92127279.htmlby khou.com staff khou.com Posted on April 26, 2010 at 4:09 PM HOUSTON—If you saw some strange lights in the sky over the weekend, you weren’t alone. Several people contacted 11 News about the mysterious fireballs, so we asked the chairman of the University of Houston’s physics department for an educated guess about them. Dr. Lawrence Pinsky, who also teaches astronomy at the university, said the lights don’t pose a threat to us. "They are a collection of parts of space junk re-entering the atmosphere from sort of a common orbit," Pinsky said. "The fact that they fluctuate in intensity is normal." Pinsky also said the movement of the lights was consistent with that of space junk. Most space junk lands harmlessly in the ocean, and there haven’t been any recorded instances of injuries from it.
